A century that saw two World Wars, the Womens’ Rights Movement and scientific leaps forward. But through all this, the fabric of the city, the beautiful historic buildings, remained largely unchanged.
As the world began to modernise from the sixteenth century, Cambridge’s economy turned around and it was once more becoming a thriving town. At the same time the University found itself at the centre of important scientific discoveries.
Often the history of Cambridge after 1209 is presented as simply a story of the development of the University with the town itself largely forgotten. But, it is important to remember that in the early thirteenth century, Cambridge was a thriving town.
Just a few decades after Cambridge University first emerged in 1209 they started to realise that they needed to establish organisations for their students to live in.
By the early thirteenth century the town of Cambridge was thriving. It had an internationally renowned annual fair, and was a trading hub for goods from across the UK and Europe. The town centre was packed with markets, churches and homes.
By the end of the dark ages Cambridge was starting to flourish. The Mercian King Offa had built a bridge and from this it got its new name: Granta Brycge (Bridge over the River Granta). But in the 9th century Anglo-Saxon England came under threat.
Roman Cambridge, or Duroliponte, had flourished but like much of the country it went into decline after the fall of the Roman Empire. Those who were left in Cambridge were cut off from the rest of the Empire. Change was fast and permanent.
Today Cambridge is most famous for its University. But Cambridge’s history dates back centuries before. This series will explore the history of settlements on the site of Cambridge from as early as 360,000 BC until the modern day.
