Florence has to be one of my favourite cities in Europe. The combination of fantastic food, unrivalled art galleries, and a wonderful setting on the River Arno surrounded by the Tuscan countryside make it the ideal place for a short city break. My wife and I chose Florence to celebrate our wedding anniversary and it was perfect. We stayed in the excellent 5 star Hotel Relais Santa Croce right in the heart of Florence which made exploring the city easy. This elegant hotel is housed in an 18th Century palazzo and the rooms are stylishly designed with a mixture of classic and contemporary furnishings. They have a fantastic fine dining restaurant which we dined at on our first night and it is the ideal place to celebrate a special occasion. We spent our time in Florence sightseeing; visiting the excellent museums and galleries, including the vast Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia Gallery where Michelangelo’s breathtaking statue of David is displayed. We of course managed to squeeze some shopping time in. Florence is one of the best places to buy leather goods and Sarah was able to buy a new handbag from one the leather shops near the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge. Early evening we climbed the steep steps up to the Piazzale Michelangelo, which is the ideal place to sit with a cold beer or an Aperol Spritz, and watch the sunset. The views of Florence below are stunning. Having dined in the hotel’s restaurant on our first night we wanted to try some of the local cuisine and one of my favourite restaurants in Florence is the lovely Trattoria Del Fagioli, a wonderful local restaurant that feels like you are stepping back in time. The menu is ever changing based on seasonal produce and the owner will happily make recommendations for you. We skipped dessert in the restaurant and headed to Gelateria della Passera for some of the best ice cream I’ve ever had. 2 nights in Florence isn’t quite enough so I’m already planning our next trip and next time we will definitely find time to squeeze in a tour out to the Chianti wine region to wander amongst the vineyards and sample a glass or two! Please do contact me to organise your next trip to Florence. I will be able to recommend the best hotels, restaurants and can also organise fast-track entrance tickets to all the museums.
Charlie Dyson - Travel Counsellor: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Charlie helped advise us on a magical family trip to Lapland. From the outset Charlie had great knowledge and provided us with lots of literature and options for various trips that would suit our family. We opted for the day trip “Search for Santa”. This was an incredible day starting at 4am and arriving home at 11:30pm. Even the flight was an exciting magical experience, from Christmas carol competitions, kids activity packs, colouring competitions and the best of all Santa landing on top of the plane during one of his “test runs”. Lapland itself looked just as we imagined, postcard picture perfect. Throughout the year Charlie was checking in with us and on hand to offer advice on what we should take and what was included within the package. Before we went Charlie had made sure we were well informed of our trip. We will definitely be using him again in the future.
Fantastic experience: Charlie is one of the most knowledgeable and well travelled people I've ever met. He's been a go-to for travel planning for me and many of my friends and colleagues. Would highly recommend - 5 stars.
